Autism in Children

Understanding childhood autism, recognising the signs, and accessing professional assessment and support.

Every child develops differently, but some children experience challenges with social communication, sensory processing and understanding the world around them.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect how a child communicates, interacts and experiences everyday life.

An autism assessment can help families gain a clearer understanding of their child's strengths, challenges and support needs, helping them access appropriate guidance both at home and in education.

What Is Autism in Children?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a child communicates, interacts with others and experiences the world around them.

Autism presents differently in every child. Some children may experience challenges with social communication, while others may have sensory sensitivities, a preference for routine or highly focused interests.

Autism is not an illness and does not need to be cured. Rather, it reflects a different way of thinking, processing information and interacting with the environment.

An assessment can help families better understand their child's individual strengths and needs, allowing them to access appropriate support and strategies to help them thrive.

How Autism Can Affect Daily Life

Autism can influence many aspects of a child's daily life, although every child will have their own unique experiences and strengths.

Children with autism may experience:

  • Challenges understanding social situations

  • Difficulty adapting to changes in routine

  • Sensory sensitivities in busy environments

  • Differences in communication styles

  • Strong preferences for structure and predictability

  • Focused interests and repetitive behaviours

  • Difficulties managing overwhelming situations

Many autistic children are creative, capable and highly knowledgeable in areas that interest them. With understanding and the right support, they can flourish both at home and in education.

What Happens During a Child Autism Assessment?

child-austim5.png

1. Initial Consultation with Parents or Guardians

The assessment begins with a discussion about your concerns, your child's development and any challenges experienced at home, school or in social situations. Your child will also take part in an ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) assessment with a specialist clinician.

2. Developmental History and Information Gathering

Following the ADOS assessment, you and your child will meet with a clinician who will explore your child's early development, communication skills, educational experiences and any relevant information provided by parents, carers or schools. The clinician will continue to work with your family throughout the assessment process.

3. Autism Assessment and Clinical Evaluation

Our clinicians conduct a comprehensive evaluation using recognised diagnostic criteria to understand your child's communication style, behaviour and developmental profile.

4. Feedback, Recommendations and Written Report

Following the assessment, we provide detailed feedback, discuss the findings and supply a written report outlining recommendations and next steps.
